Getting started

How it works

Simple, low-pressure, and built around your child.

1

Check you're set up

Lessons need a laptop, a tablet and stylus, and a reliable internet connection — so your child can handwrite maths naturally, right alongside me.

2

Get in touch

Tell me about your child through the Get Started form. Your first lesson is risk-free — if it's not the right fit, there's no charge.

3

A plan, then weekly lessons

I find their current level and set a plan, then we meet weekly online on an interactive whiteboard — with homework each lesson to lock it in.

4

Ongoing progress

Lessons run weekly through the term. You stay in the loop on how they're tracking, and we adapt as their confidence grows.

My goal isn't just to get your child through the next test — it's to build strong foundations that set them up for the long term. I teach for understanding over memorising, keep lessons calm and encouraging, and tailor each student's path toward wherever they're heading, whether that's NCEA, Cambridge, IB, or beyond.

NCEA Level 1-3Cambridge AS & A LevelIBDP AA/AI HL & SLScholarship Calculus

I received my Masters Degree in Maths (First Class Honors) from the University of Auckland in 2014. With nearly 15 years of teaching experience, I have taught at many different schools across Auckland including Kristin School. I specialize in delivering highly effective online education and received the Ernest Duncan Award in 2018 for my contributions to the field. More than anything, I focus on building strong mathematical foundations for long-term growth — planning each student's learning with the end in mind. I strengthen the fundamentals first, then tailor their path toward whatever they choose next, whether that's NCEA, Cambridge, IB, or beyond. With the right foundations and a little foresight, students aren't just ready for their next exam — they're set up for the pathway that suits them best.

David

"Mr. Clarkson has been an excellent tutor for my son. He is highly reliable, professional, and organised in his teaching approach. We have been very pleased to see clear improvement in my son's understanding and confidence in both math and physics. I highly recommend him as a tutor."

Michelle

"We engaged Kenneth at the 11th hour for our sons NCEA level 2 physics exam. Kenneth had two weeks to help get the student over the mark. Kenneth meet with the student every second day, was punctual, reliable and most of all our son enjoyed working with Kenneth and said 'If I had had Kenneth as my teacher this year I wouldn't need extra tutoring and I would understand this'. The exam was sat today and our son felt very prepared believed it went well. Thank you Kenneth, whatever the result of the exam, your tutoring was fantastic and we appreciated your commitment to the task at hand. We recommend Kenneth without hesitation."

Michelle

"Mr Clarkson's teaching has helped my daughter immensely with maths. Over the three years he has been teaching her she has gone from getting 3 or 4/8 in maths, to 7-8/8 in maths. We're really lucky to have him teaching our daughter and highly recommend his classes to anyone trying to improve their maths"

Lily

"I’ve been working with Mr. Clarkson for two terms, and his guidance has been incredibly helpful. He explains difficult concepts clearly, especially in calculus and physics, making them easier to understand. His support has definitely improved my confidence and understanding of the subjects. Highly recommend"

Lin

"老师很有水平,讲课深入浅出。孩子以前最怕函数,现在听了几节课后彻底开窍了。老师非常擅长把复杂的逻辑拆解开来,特别适合基础薄弱或者想打牢根基的学生。"

Cassandra

"Kenneth has been tutoring my daughter for her NCEA level 3 Calculus exam. He has been excellent and really helped her understand how to approach the more compiicated questions across the 3 topics so she could sit her exam with confidence. I would highly recommend Kenneth as a maths tutor."

Lara

"My son has really enjoyed being tutored by Mr. Clarkson. He has made real progress, feels more confident and has genuinely re-discovered his love for Maths again!"

Mike

"Kenneth has great credentials, and an amazing style with the students. He is a professional teacher and, unlike so many tutors who just help with homework and do their best to assist in 'understanding today's school lesson', Mr. Clarkson teaches. He ensures the foundations are in place and teaches with and ahead of the school maths curriculum, sets reinforcing homework, feeds the brain and teaches to grow as well as to understand and be better. As the highest endorsement we can give - after working with our Year 11 (15YO), he is now also teaching our 11 year old. And they both love it."

Weila

"Kenneth is a great maths teacher. Our 11 year old son really enjoys learning maths from Kenneth. Kenneth is patient, kind and professional. He could quickly find out my son’s level and built his learning objectives from there. He’s offering extra challenges while making maths studies fun. We are lucky to find Kenneth as our son’s maths teacher offering him extra learning to keep his passion for maths going further. Thank you Kenneth!"

Linda

"Highly recommend Kenneth! He has helped my 12 year old son in such a short amount of time. Very patient, identifys the struggle in my son, works well with my son. His teacher has seen a huge improvement and encourages us to continue with the tutor. So happy with Kenneth. Thank you."

Jessie

"“非常有耐心且充满正能量。孩子以前对数学没兴趣,但老师很会鼓励学生,课堂氛围轻松但不失严谨。现在孩子主动做题的积极性高了很多,数学不再是家里的难题了。”"

Naomi

"Kenneth was an amazing support for my daughter in the few weeks before her NCEA level 3 Calculus exam. She wanted to fine tune some areas that had challenged her in Mocks, and Kenneth made space to fit in quick tutoring sessions to give her a huge amount of confidence going into the exam. She said he was fantastic at explaining things, and felt very pleased with how the exam then went. Thanks Kenneth, would thoroughly recommend you."

Stana

"Kenneth provided a great tutoring online to our son Philip who was preparing for the maths Cambridge exam. Philip's experience with Kenneth - he explains everything very well so it is easy to understand, is patient, supportive, easy to relate to, and a great listener. Philip recommended him highly. His Cambridge results were what he hoped for. Would certainly work with Kenneth again if needed maths support later on at University, as not taking maths in his last year of High School. Kenneth was also accommodating with his schedule and managed to fit in a class on Sundays - we really appreciated that and felt lucky to have come across such a great tutor."

David

"Kenneth has been tutoring my son L3 calculus. He has a well thought-out system for teaching online which enables students to make the most of the sessions. During the lessons, he is well prepared and has the skills to diver deeper into particular areas of difficulty and pivot the learning accordingly. He has provided clear explanation of all topics. His communication is excellent, and he is always on time and invoices promptly. My son has really benefited from having Kenneth as a tutor and we would highly recommend him to others."

Nicole

"Lovely tutor for both maths and physics"

Andrea

"My daughter is enjoying her tutoring with Kenneth. He is knowledgeable and teaches the course material well."

Frequently asked questions

Everything from Year 7–8 intermediate maths through to NCEA Levels 1–3, Cambridge IGCSE/AS/A Level, IB (both AA and AI, at SL and HL), Scholarship Calculus, and first-year university support.

Every lesson is online and live — one-on-one or in a small group — taught on video with a shared interactive whiteboard. No travel, and the whiteboard from each lesson is saved so your child can revise from it later.

Honestly — for almost all students, yes, and often better. The research agrees: large studies (including from the Education Endowment Foundation) find well-run online tutoring delivers the same learning gains as in-person, because what really drives results is the tutor, the structure, and turning up consistently — not the room. My lessons are built to match everything good about sitting side by side: we're on live video, and we both write on a shared interactive whiteboard (SlateDrop) in real time, so I can work through a problem while your child solves alongside me, circling and correcting their working as we go. Better still, every board is saved — so instead of a wiped whiteboard or a lost worksheet, your child builds a growing set of personalised revision notes from every lesson. Add no travel, the comfort of their own desk, and easier scheduling, and most of my students say they'd never go back to in-person — it's the same teaching and connection, just without leaving home.

A laptop, a tablet and a stylus are all required. The laptop runs the video and our shared whiteboard, while the tablet and stylus let your child handwrite maths naturally — working through problems by hand, right alongside me, just like pen and paper.

Lessons run for an hour, weekly, at the same time each week through the term — that regular rhythm is a big part of what makes progress stick. One-on-one lessons can be cancelled anytime, while small group classes ask for a commitment for the term so the group stays settled and consistent.

Yes — homework is set after every lesson. Maths is a skill, and like any skill it needs practice: homework gives your child the chance to consolidate what we covered and make it their own. Regular, repeated practice is what turns “I understood it in the lesson” into lasting understanding they can rely on in an exam.

Both are excellent — it comes down to your child. Small group classes are genuinely great value, and the students in them make huge gains. I only ever place a student in a group with others working at the same level, so nobody feels left behind or held back — and because classes are capped at four, everyone still gets real one-on-one support. Group students love it: the shared momentum and sense of learning alongside others is hugely motivating. Groups follow a set curriculum for their year level or course, and places are limited (just four per class, with a limited number of classes), so it's worth enquiring early to check availability. One-on-one lessons, on the other hand, are completely tailored: your child gets my full attention and the freedom to bring in whatever they need help with that day. Tell me about your child and I'll recommend the best fit.

One-on-one is $89 per lesson (currently $83 per lesson with the Term 3 Special), and small group is $42 per lesson ($39 per lesson with the special).

Your first lesson is risk-free. If it's not right for your child and you decide not to continue, that first hour is on me — no charge. I'm confident you'll see the value from the very first lesson.
